Alliance Française was founded in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists such as Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne, with the objectives of reinforcing friendship and solidarity between peoples through the promotion of the French language and cultural projects.
Currently, the international network of Alliance Française is composed of 1,062 not-for-profit institutions in 132 countries, which operate under local legislation and are managed by a Board made up of prominent personalities in each country.
Alliance Française de Nairobi was founded in 1949 and is currently the largest on the African continent with more than 4,000 students attending French language courses every year and with a wide range of cultural events (exhibitions, concerts, festivals, films…) organized within its premises. It receives strong support from the French Embassy in Kenya for the implementation of its cultural, artistic and educational cooperation projects.
Equipped with a modern auditorium, two exhibition galleries and a popular “garden stage” for concerts, Alliance Française de Nairobi organized 122 cultural and artistic events in 2006 attended by 48, 000 spectators. Welcome to the most vibrant cultural institution in town!
The Alliance Française de Nairobi offers a rich programme of annual activities showcasing local and international Arts and encouraging creativity.
We support the production and presentation of artistic works, across all disciplines that reflect the diversity, aspirations and contradictions of our contemporary society and that open up space for dialogue.
Alliance Française also serves as an important bridge for artistic exchanges between Francophone and Anglophone artists.
